eSIM Data Usage Calculator

Estimate how many gigabytes you need before you buy.

Most travelers use 1 to 2 GB of mobile data per day. That covers maps, messaging, social media, and occasional web browsing. Heavier users who stream video or make long video calls can hit 3 to 5 GB daily. The exact number depends on your habits, not your destination. This calculator breaks your daily routine into seven common activities, multiplies each by a verified per-hour data rate, and totals the result for your trip length. It then adds a 15% buffer for background app traffic and recommends a plan tier. Use the estimate to compare prices on our price-per-GB rankings or pick a destination from our full country list.

Methodology

How the estimate works

Each activity has a fixed data rate measured in gigabytes per hour. These rates come from carrier documentation and app-level bandwidth measurements. For example, SD video streaming (480p) uses about 0.70 GB per hour, while HD video at 1080p uses roughly 2.50 GB per hour.

The calculator multiplies your hours per day by the rate for each activity, sums the results, and scales by trip length. The 15% buffer covers background data: automatic app updates, cloud photo sync, and location sharing.

A practical tip: download offline maps and playlists over Wi-Fi before you leave. That alone can cut your daily mobile usage by 30% or more.

Common questions

Data usage FAQ

How much data does the average traveler use per day?

Most travelers use between 1 GB and 2 GB per day. That covers maps, social media, messaging, and light web browsing. Heavy video streaming or frequent video calls push usage above 3 GB per day.

Should I buy a bigger plan or an unlimited plan?

If your estimated total is under 10 GB, a fixed data plan is almost always cheaper per gigabyte. Nomad starts at $0.74/GB and Saily at $2.99/GB for fixed plans. Unlimited plans from Holafly (from $3.90/day) or Airalo (3 GB/day full speed, then throttled) make sense only when daily usage consistently tops 2 to 3 GB.

Does this calculator account for Wi-Fi usage?

No. The estimate assumes all activity uses mobile data. Most travelers connect to hotel or cafe Wi-Fi for at least a few hours per day, so your real mobile usage will likely be lower than the estimate. Treat the number as a safe upper bound.

Why does the calculator add a 15% buffer?

Background app updates, location sharing, and automatic cloud photo uploads consume data you may not notice. The 15% buffer accounts for these invisible drains. Running out of data mid-trip is more expensive than buying a slightly larger plan upfront.
